Safer sex tips: cunnilingus or eating pussy

Below are some tips on how to perform different sex activities safely.

Cunnilingus or eating pussy

Licking someone’s vagina

Although the risk is small, you may contract an STI if you lick someone’s vulva or vagina. There is also a higher risk of passing on bloodborne STIs through oral sex when a woman has her period.

Hepatitis B, syphilis, herpes, genital warts, chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be transmitted through this sex act. A woman infected with HIV can pass the virus on to a partner if they perform cunnilingus during her period.

TIPS

  • If you eat someone’s pussy, check for warts, abrasions or sores.
  • Ask the woman if she has her period. Some sex workers continue working while having their period and use a stringless tampon to ensure clients don’t notice.
  • Use a dental dam.

Someone licks your vagina

The risk of contracting an STI is relatively small if a customer performs cunnilingus on you. However, yeast infections are not uncommon. This is because your vaginal flora can be disrupted by the saliva of the person who licks your vagina. Saliva contains millions of bacteria that can upset the natural balance of your vagina.

TIPS

  • Look at the mouth of the person who will lick your vagina and check for warts, cold sores and lesions.
  • Refuse the sex act if necessary, or use a dental dam.
