The patch has become unstuck

What do you do when the hormone patch becomes unstuck, loosens at the edges or falls off?

Less than one day ago (up to 24 hours)

  • Try to stick the patch back on or apply a new patch immediately.
  • There is no need for an additional contraceptive. Replace the patch on your usual day of the week.

Note: Never re-apply a patch which:

  • no longer sticks
  • sticks to itself or to another surface
  • has come loose a second time or has fallen off
  • Do not use a tape or bandages to keep the patch in place.
  • If you can’t re-apply the patch, throw it away and put on a new patch immediately.

More than one day ago (24 hours or more) or if you don’t know how long the patch has been off:

  • Start a new four-week cycle by applying a new patch.
  • It means you now have a new day one and a new 'plaster replacement day'.
  • Use a condom during the first week of the new cycle.
  • Use emergency contraception if you had unprotected sex during the previous 5 days.

What if you've forgotten to replace a patch?

At the beginning of a patch cycle (week 1, day 1):

  • Apply the first patch of the new cycle as soon as remember.
  • Use a condom for one week.
  • You have a new 'patch replacement day' and a new day 1.

In the middle of the patch cycle (week 2 or 3):

One or two days (up to 48 hours):

  • Apply a new patch as soon as you remember.
  • Apply your next patch on your scheduled 'patch replacement day'.
  • No additional contraception is required.

More than two days (48 hours or more):

  • Start a new four-week cycle as soon as you remember, apply the first patch of the new cycle.
  • You now have a new 'plaster replacement day' and a new day 1.
  • Use a condom during the first week of the new cycle.
  • Use emergency contraception if you had unprotected sex during the previous 5 days.

At the end of the patch cycle (week 4):

  • Remove the patch as soon as you remember.
  • Start the next cycle on the scheduled 'plaster replacement day' (the day following day 28).
  • No additional contraception is required.
