Lubricants
Why use a lubricant?
Sometimes the vagina is not moist enough. When that happens, sex can be painful and uncomfortable and produce small wounds that allow germs to enter the body more easily.
Friction is the main reason why condoms break. Using a lubricant can reduce the risk of a condom breaking.
The anus does not produce enough natural lubrication. You should therefore use a lot of lubricant when engaging in anal sex. The lubricant on the condom often is not enough.
What if I have a neovagina?
Water-based lubricants are not recommended if you have a neovagina as they can weaken and irritate the vaginal tissue. If you prefer to use this type of lubricant, you best wash it off after use.
We recommend using an oil-based lubricant. There is no need to wash it off after use. Make sure to use a polyurethane-based condom as latex condoms don’t mix with oil and may break during sex.
How do I apply a lubricant?
You can apply lubricant to the penis or to the outside of the vagina. In the case of anal sex, it is recommended to lubricate both the anus and the penis and repeat this several times during sex.
What kind of lubricant?
There are 3 types of lubricant for sex.
Water-based lubricant
Water-based lubricants dry out quickly and you may need to apply a little extra during sex. You may also need more than you expect. They are often the cheapest option and they are usually condom and sex toy-safe. You could also use your own saliva as a substitute lubricant if need be, but this dries out even more quickly.
Silicone-based lubricant
Silicone-based lubricants are a bit thicker than water-based lubricants. Although they are more expensive, they last longer because you need to use less.
You must check on the packaging whether this type of lubricant is compatible with the condoms and they sex toys you use. This type of lubricant may dissolve your sex toys.
Oil-based lubricant
Oil-based lubricants are used for neovaginas. You can only these with polyurethane condoms. These lubes can damage or break latex condoms.
