Can I keep working with an STD?

Working with an STD

If you have an STD and it has not been treated, you might infect others!

A gonorrhoea or chlamydia infection is contagious up to approximately one week after treatment.

  • It is recommended not to have sexual contacts during this week after treatment.  This way, the mucous membranes have time to recover and heal.
  • You could use a condom during this week, also when having oral sex, if you have an infection in your throat.
  • A week after treatment, the infection will have disappeared.

Equally, in the early stages of syphilis, it is important not to have sexual contacts up to one week after treatment.

If the complaints persist or return, contact a doctor, as it might be a new of recurrent infection.
